What to Do the Night Before an Early Flight: 10 Things to Check
.Discover what to do the Night Before an Early Flight and ten things you will need to check. If you’re still deciding whether that dawn departure is worth it, check out my guide to why morning flights can be a great idea. The airport may feel calmer, you can often arrive at your destination with most of the day still ahead of you, and there’s something rather exciting about setting off while everyone else is still asleep.
But that excitement can disappear remarkably quickly when the alarm goes off at 3.30 am, and you suddenly can’t remember where you put your passport.
A little preparation the night before an early flight can make the whole morning much easier. Instead of stumbling around the house checking plugs, weighing suitcases, and wondering whether you remembered to download your boarding pass, you can simply get dressed, grab your bags, and go.
Here are 10 things worth doing before you go to bed.

1. Check In and Save Your Boarding Pass
If your airline allows online check-in, get it done the night before rather than leaving it until you reach the airport.
Once you’ve checked in, save your boarding pass somewhere you can reach easily. If you’re using a digital boarding pass, adding it to your phone wallet or taking a screenshot can be useful in case the airline app or your internet connection decides not to cooperate at precisely the wrong moment.
If you prefer a paper copy, print it and put it with your passport and other travel documents.
This is also a good time to double-check the names on the booking, your departure time and any baggage allowance.
Little tip: Don’t rely on having important travel information in just one place. Keeping a screenshot or offline copy on your phone takes seconds and can save a lot of frantic tapping at the airport.
2. Night before an Early Flight, Check Terminal and Journey to the Airport
Before you settle down for the night, check that your flight is still departing at the expected time and confirm which terminal you need.
Then work backwards.
What time do you need to be at the airport? How long will the journey take? Have you allowed a little extra time for roadworks, parking, shuttle buses or an unexpectedly long queue?
If you’ve booked a taxi, airport transfer or parking, check the confirmation now rather than trying to find it while you’re half awake.
Once everything is confirmed, screenshot any booking details you might need and put them somewhere easy to find on your phone.
It might feel like over-preparing, but when you’re leaving home before sunrise, every decision you can make the night before is one less thing to think about in the morning.
3. Finish Packing the Night Before an Early Flight
This is not the time for “I’ll pop that in tomorrow morning.” Finish packing the night before an early flight, zip the suitcase up and consider the job done. “Make sure your passport, medication and other essentials are going with you rather than disappearing into your checked luggage.”
Anything you still need in the morning — toothbrush, medication, glasses or phone charger — can go together in one obvious place, ready to drop into your hand luggage before you leave.
It’s also worth doing a quick check of your cabin bag. Make sure your passport, medication and other essentials are going with you rather than disappearing into your checked luggage. It’s also worth checking my guide to things not to put in your checked luggage before you finally zip the suitcase closed.
And if you’re taking a power bank, remember that it belongs in your cabin baggage, not your checked suitcase.
Once everything is packed, resist the temptation to keep adding “just one more thing”. Your suitcase does not need three emergency cardigans.
4. Weigh Your Luggage Before You Go to Bed
There are few things guaranteed to wake you up faster at an airport than discovering your suitcase is over the airline’s weight allowance.
Weighing your luggage at home gives you time to rearrange things calmly rather than opening your suitcase on the airport floor and deciding which pair of shoes you love least.
A small Digital Luggage Scale is particularly handy because you can take it on holiday with you and check the weight again before your return flight — especially useful if you’re partial to bringing home a few holiday purchases.

Once you know your bags are within the allowance, zip them up, put them by the door and leave them alone.
Yes, that includes you.
Step away from the suitcase.
5. Put Your Passport, Wallet and Travel Documents Together
You do not want to be conducting a full-scale search for your passport at four o’clock in the morning.
The night before an early flight, put everything you’ll need for the journey together in one safe, obvious place. That might include your passport, driving licence, wallet, travel insurance details, parking confirmation and any printed tickets or booking information.
A Travel Document Organiser can be useful if you’re travelling as a family, a larger document organiser can be particularly useful. It keeps passports, tickets, cards and other important bits together in one place — and you can use it to store your travel documents safely at home between trips too.
The important thing is knowing exactly where everything is before you go to bed.
And whatever you do, don’t put your passport somewhere exceptionally safe.
We all know what happens to things put somewhere exceptionally safe.
6. Night before an early Flight Charge Your Phone and Essential Devices
Your phone tends to work rather hard on a travel day. It may be your boarding pass, sat-nav, camera, entertainment system, booking folder and emergency contact all rolled into one.
So give it a full charge overnight.
Check anything else you’ll rely on too — headphones, smartwatch, Kindle or tablet — and put the charging cables you’re taking together ready to pack.
If you’re travelling with a power bank, charge that as well and remember to keep it in your cabin baggage rather than your checked suitcase.
This is also a good moment to download anything you might want without an internet connection: books, music, podcasts, films, maps or copies of important travel information.
Then, when morning arrives, you can unplug everything, pack the final cables and head for the door without hunting around behind the bedside cabinet for a missing charger.
Bonus Tip: Can You Drop Your Bags the Night Before?
Here’s one worth checking if you have a particularly early departure: your airline may allow you to drop off your checked luggage at the airport the evening before your flight.
Often called twilight bag drop or day-before bag drop, the service is available for selected airlines and flights at some UK airports.
If you live reasonably close to the airport — or you’re staying at an airport hotel the night before — it can be a lovely way to remove one more job from your early-morning departure.
Imagine arriving the next morning with only your cabin bags to worry about.
Bliss.
But don’t simply turn up with your suitcase the night before. Check the latest information directly with your airline and departure airport first, as participating airlines, eligible flights, opening times and requirements can vary.
It’s one of those little travel tricks that won’t work for everyone, but when it does, it can make the night before an early flight — and the morning itself — considerably easier.

A Calmer Start to Your Early Flight
Getting up before dawn may never feel completely civilised, but doing the preparation the night before an early flight can make an enormous difference.
The aim isn’t to organise every second or spend the evening worrying about everything that could go wrong. It’s simply to remove as many little decisions as possible from the morning.
Pack the bags. Check the documents. Charge the phone. Set the alarm.
Then stop.
Go to bed knowing that you’ve done what you can.
Tomorrow morning, you can get dressed, pick up your bags and head for the airport — and once you’re safely through security, sit down, take that first sip of coffee and finally relax.
That’s when the adventure begins.
